<Artist note>

‘An amazing olive tree,
a once-in-a-century olive tree,
a thousand-year-old olive tree…’

I flew over half of the world with a great expectation.
When I first faced the tree, I saw a distorted trunk, splits of its body and traces of losing its life.

A word came into my mind: “Squeezed out”
As if it was twisting a piece of cloth to get the water out, to press the oil out of its fruits, it was giving out every bit of its life. Over thousands of years, these trees were giving out everything from where they were standing.  These sacrifices they made were visible within them.

These trees were living before Christ!
No before Buddha and way before Confucius!

We commemorate the death of our family, friends and lovers.  I do the same for these trees who watch over us for thousands of years.  I give out great respect and thankfulness whenever I pay a visit to capture them in photo shoots.

When I am with these olive trees, it feels as though they are talking to me.  It is not something scary, sad, or light at heart, not a burden nor desperate.
It was just like a breeze.
People who will listen will hear and feel who will want to feel that soft breeze, a wind that holds the secrets of life.

Over ten years, I have been taking photos of these old trees and letting go of things I have been holding onto in my life.  When I am at a point where I have given up everything, I too want to be a tree.
A tree that is light as wind, high as clouds, and warm as soil.

Would I be granted such a beautiful moment as a human being?

<작가노트>

'경이로운 올리브 나무,
