I made a series called “Blue Trees” that focused on my love of trees. Through that series, I was able to gather the main characters to make a series called “Forest.” And now, with the “Dreaming Tree” series, I want to express the “world of trees” and “trees and the world of nature.”

​

It doesn’t mean that something is invisible if you can’t see it, and it doesn’t mean that it has no reality if you can’t touch it. Like the wind, and the sun.

Perhaps the bigger and more fundamental things are ones that are never actually touched or seen. Nature is perfect and enriched when it is unseen and untouched.

 

Maybe it's my desire to express these things in my pictures.

The invisible may seem natural as it is not visible. It may also seem natural because it is untouched.

Nevertheless, I am a person who is engaged in the “visual arts,” so I have to express these things with my eyes.

 

The identities of human beings and trees are removed from the framework of “animals and plants” and simply become living beings that coexist. Furthermore, when I take a picture of a tree, I get a desperate feeling that human beings can live here on this planet as animals because they have nature and trees. 

So this is not only the story of the tree, but the story of human life.

I walked out of the work studio and saw the autumn trees that lined the street.

Like the last Christmas decoration, the final leaf falls from the tree, and there is no longer life. Through its patience and sacrifice, a beautiful and wonderful personality is looking down at me. It is time to throw it all off, just like the tree does with its leaves, and face the tree in my heart.

<작가노트>

​

나무에 애정을 담아 나무가 주인공인 ‘푸른 나무’ 시리즈를 만들었고, 이 주인공들을 모아 ‘숲’ 시리즈를 만들었다. 그리고 이제 ‘꿈꾸는 나무’ 시리즈로 나무와 나무, 나무와 자연의 세계를 표현하고자 한다.

​

눈에 보이지 않는다고 존재하지 않는 것이 아니며, 만질 수 없다고 실체가 없는 것이 아니다. 바람이 그렇고, 햇빛이 그렇다. 어쩌면 더 크고 더 근원적인 것은 만져지지도 않고 보이지 않는지도 모른다. 이렇게 눈에 보이지 않고 만져지지 않는 것이 함께할 때 자연은 완벽해지고 풍요로워진다.

​

어쩌면 이런 것들을 사진에 표현하고자 한 것은 욕심일지도 모른다. 안 보이는 것은 안 보이는 대로, 만져지지 않는 것은 건드리지 않는 것이 자연스러울지도 모르겠다. 
하지만, 그럼에도 난 눈으로 볼 수 있게 표현해야 하는 ‘시각예술’에 종사하는 자가 아니던가.

인간과 나무의 정체성이 ‘동물과 식물’이라는 틀에서 벗어나 공생하는 생명체라는, 나아가 나무가 있기에 동물인 인간이 살아갈 수 있다는 절박한 심정으로 나무를 찍는다. 
그래서 이것은 나무만이 아닌, 바로 우리 인간의 생명에 관한 이야기이기도 하다. 

 

작업실을 나와 늦가을 거리의 가로수를 보았다. 
철 지난 크리스마스 장식처럼 나뭇잎을 떨구고 아무의 눈에도 들지 못하던 나무는 온데간데없고, 한 생명체가 서 있다. 인내와 희생, 그리하여 아름답고 경이로운 한 인격체가 나를 내려다보고 있다. 
이제 저 나무처럼 다 벗어던지고, 가슴 속 나의 나무를 마주해야 할 때이다.
