Yoll Lee is a Fine Art photographer who has been working with the ‘trees’ as subject matter for more than 10 years. Born in the countryside where he spent his childhood befriending trees in nature, 'trees' naturally became a big part of Lee's life and inevitably a crucial subject matter of his work. Photographer Yoll Lee describes that 'trees are slow humans and humans are fast trees' and that they are all equal living things coexisting on the earth.
Through 10 years of exhibitions in tree photographs, Lee has been expressing the beauty of trees as well as the precious role they play as humans’ companions. He is also actively involved in protecting trees. Lee has been photographing trees that have been designated as national protectors and natural monuments until three years ago when he began to expand his scope of work to photograph the ‘trees of the world’. He successfully completed his shooting projects: ‘Laliguras’ of Himalayas, Nepal as well as 'Olive Tree' of Puglia, Italy. The current Baobab tree shooting is a project that Lee has been dreaming of ever since he started working with trees as the subject of his work.
Lee projects his unique thoughts to the trees by giving special light effects to them at night and capturing them on the camera. Gazing at these pictures of baobab trees, which are reminiscent of paintings, you may feel as if you have entered the story of “The Little Prince”. As Lee mentioned a number of times, he has been conveying the message that trees are humans’ companion, resting place and life through his tree projects. This baobab tree exhibition adds further meanings on top of this message and tells the story of us humans’ dreams, fantasies, and fairy tales through trees.
At this exhibition, you will not only see the terrifying baobab trees you may have read about in ‘The Little Prince’, but you can also expect to see the ‘phenomenal baobab trees loved by the gods’, as Lee described. If you immerse yourself for long enough in the photographs of baobab trees standing aloof under the starry night sky, you may even get an illusion that you have entered the primordial gods’ world.
‘나무 사진가’ 이흥렬은 10년 이상 나무를 소재로 작업하고 있는 Fine Art 작가이다. 시골에서 태어나 자연 속에서 나무를 친구 삼아 보낸 어린 시절의 경험으로, ‘나무’는 자연스럽게 작가의 인생에 큰 부분을 차지하였고, 또한 필연적으로 그의 작품 소재가 되었다. 사진가 이흥렬은 '나무는 느린 인간이고 인간은 빠른 나무'라며 모두 함께 지구에서 살아가는 동등한 생명체라는 것을 이야기한다.
10여 회의 나무 사진 전시를 통하여 나무의 아름다움, 인간의 동반자로서 나무의 소중함을 이야기하고 있으며, 나무 보호를 위한 일에도 적극적으로 활동하고 있다. 이흥렬 작가는 그동안 국내의 보호수와 천연기념물로 지정된 나무들을 주로 촬영해왔는데, 3년 전부터 활동 무대를 넓혀 ‘세계의 나무’를 촬영하기 시작하였다. 지금까지 2017년 네팔 히말라야의 ‘랄리구라스’, 2018년 이탈리아 뿔리아의 ‘올리브나무’ 촬영 프로젝트를 성공적으로 마쳤다. 이번 바오밥나무 촬영은 사진가 이흥렬이 나무를 소재로 작업하기 시작하면서 줄곧 꿈꾸어왔던 프로젝트이다.
그는 밤에 나무에 조명을 주어 촬영하는 방법을 통하여 작가만의 독특한 생각을 나무에 투영하고 있다. 특히 회화를 연상시키는 이번 바오밥나무 사진들을 보노라면 마치 ‘어린 왕자’의 동화 속에 들어온 것만 같다. 작가가 여러 차례 언급한 것처럼, 나무는 인간의 친구이며, 안식처이며, 생명이라는 것을 그동안 그의 나무 사진들을 통하여 잘 표현하여 왔다면, 이번 바오밥나무 전시는 그 의미에 더해 나무를 통해 인간의 꿈과 환상, 동화를 이야기한다.
이 전시에서 어릴 적 읽은 ‘어린 왕자’의 무시무시한 바오밥나무 뿐만 아니라, 작가가 이야기한 것처럼 ‘신들이 사랑한 경이로운 바오밥나무’들을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 밤하늘 가득한 별빛 아래 고고하게 서 있는 바오밥나무 사진을 보면, 태초의 신들의 세계에 온 듯한 착각마저 든다. 이 경이롭고 아름다운 전시는 2월 3일부터 29일까지 서울 영등포에 있는 ‘아트필드 갤러리’에서 열린다.

Baobab, the trees loved by the gods
The very first impression of baobab to me was a ‘fear’ at the first time I read the ‘Le Petit Prince’ when I was a little boy. But my ‘fear’ has grown and turned to ‘awe and wonder’ in the end. The moment I realized that the ‘baobab’ actually exists, it has become my ‘yearning’ for life.
However, it feels too far for me to reach to the ‘real’ baobab which is at somewhere in Africa, as far as the physical distance itself. I became nervous and anxious every time I’ve heard about baobab from newspapers, documentaries and even from the words around me.
I’ve already decided that my next project would be baobab in Madagascar while I was on the olive tree project in Italy. Even though I made my decision, the more I was thinking about when to putting my next project into practice, the heavier burden I got.
However, all my worries and anxieties since then had disappeared at the very moment I met baobab for the first time at last. Those trees are the one the gods loved, and the one I’ve loved. They are my own trees.
The sky was only full of stars throughout shooting the baobab but even the moon was hiding from the beauty of the scene. The only thing in my eyes was the baobab itself and the stars shining above it. Nothing could separate the baobab from me, even the wind.
After all this heavenly moments, I broke into tears on my way back home.
‘Yes, it was just a dream, so forget everything. If not, you are going to die as a lonely animal in the end from missing it and just looking at your photos of it all your life.’
Then I realized I was shooting not only the baobab itself, but also my own self-portrait which kept the moment of my life. The photo of trees which live over the vast reaches of time, which was taken by a human who lives one’s brief life. This could possibly be my own picture of the deceased after my death.
My wounds from humans have been healed by trees whenever I seek them, and when my underlying loneliness has overwhelmed me, I always go back to bury myself in human world. By repeating this to-ing and fro-ing, the gap became bigger and bigger, and then I realized that I should stay at one side finally.
Yes, there might be the middle zone between them, I wish.
There were always poor kids around baobab trees in Madagascar, not knowing they were also rich in their hearts because of the baobab.
And, for a while, there was one poorer person in heart than the kids there, too.

<작가노트>
신들이 사랑한 나무 바오밥
어릴 때 읽은 ‘어린 왕자’의 바오밥나무는 내게 공포였고, 그 공포가 자라나 경이가 되었다. 그 나무가 실제로 있다는 걸 알게 되었을 때, 바오밥은 내게 동경이 되었다.
아프리카 어디에 있다는 바오밥은 그 물리적 거리 만큼 내게 너무나 먼 곳처럼 느껴졌다. 신문에서, 다큐멘터리에서, 주변에서 바오밥 소식을 접할 때마다 조바심이 났다.
작년 이탈리아 올리브나무 촬영 프로젝트를 진행하며 다음엔 마다가스카르의 바오밥이라고 결심했다. 결심은 했지만, 언제 이룰 수 있을까 마음의 짐은 점점 무거워지기만 했다.
마침내 바오밥을 보았을 때, 그동안의 모든 걱정과 불안이 한순간에 사라졌다. 저 나무들은 신들이 사랑한 나무이자 내가 사랑한 나무였다. 바로 나의 나무였다.
바오밥을 촬영하는 내내 하늘엔 별들이 가득했고 그 아름다움에 달도 숨어 버렸다. 내 앞에는 오직 바오밥과 그 위를 비추는 별빛만 가득하였다. 바람도 우리 사이를 가르지 못했다.
그렇게 천상의 시간을 보내고 돌아오는 길에 눈물이 났다. ‘그건 꿈이었어. 그러니 잊어라. 만약 잊지 못하면 네가 찍은 사진을 보며 평생 그리워하다 결국 한 마리 동물로 외로이 죽게 될 테니까’
내가 찍은 것은 결국 바오밥의 사진이 아니라 나의 한순간을 기록한 자화상이었다. 찰나를 사는 인간이 장구한 세월을 사는 나무 앞에서 찍은 사진, 어쩌면 나의 영정 사진.
인간에게서 받은 상처 나무에게 가서 위안받았고, 근원적 외로움이 도지면 다시 인간 세계에 파묻혔다. 반복 속에 간극은 커져갔고, 결국 어느 한쪽에 정착해야 하리라.
그래, 어쩌면 중간이란 것이 있을지도 몰라.
바오밥나무 주변에는 가난한 마다가스카르 아이들이 있었다. 하지만 그 아이들만 모르고 있는, 바오밥으로 인해 부유한 아이들이 언제나 거기 있었다.
그리고 그 아이들보다 더 가난한 사람 하나 잠시 같이 있었다.
